Phonics

We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to teach phonics and early reading. This progressive and synthetic scheme allows us to plan and provide daily engaging phonics lessons that are taught by teachers. In phonics, we teach children that the letters of the alphabet represent a different sound, that these can be used in a variety of combinations and are put together to make words. Children are taught how the sounds (phonemes) are blended together to read or segmented (broken down) when the children are learning to write.  The children learn to recognise all the different sounds and combinations that they might see when they are reading or writing.

Our phonics teaching starts in Foundation, week 1 and follows a very specific sequence that allows our children to build on their previous phonic knowledge and master specific phonic strategies as they move through school. As a result, all our children can tackle any unfamiliar words that they might discover. We also model these strategies in shared reading and writing both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum.

Ventrus MAT

Ventrus (formerly The Primary Academies Trust) was set up in 2011 by a group of like minded headteachers who wanted to build a stable and secure platform from which they could grow a network of excellent schools.
