Modern Foreign Languages

At St David's, we recognise the importance of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and we acknowledge the influence that Europe has on our lives and, as the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. We aim to provide our children with a high-quality education in MFL, which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures.   Our current MFL taught is French, however, we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages.

We use ‘La Jolie Ronde’ to support our teaching of French.   Language skills are taught progressively, through regular taught lessons and children acquire new vocabulary.  Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through:
• Games – in order to develop vocabulary through repetition, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
• Role-play and conversational work – these relate to the situations the children may find themselves in the future.
• Action songs and rhymes – to develop phonetic skills, memory skills and to further vocabulary.
• Mime – to associate vocabulary with kinaesthetic learning.
• Reading and writing quality materials – as their confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
• We celebrate European Day of Languages
• Children learn about the country France and what it is like to live in this country.

As a result of our curriculum design, children develop a love of languages and learning about other cultures.   They are equipped with the skills and confidence to continue to learn French or embark on the new challenge of learning another language.
